If you are any kind of business owner or have a job then you know how important it is to be productive. I want to show you in today’s post how to be very productive at work. By work, I mean whether you work from home or at an actual 9-5.
Get It In Your Mind
I work from home and have done so for over 10 years now. So I know just how hard it is to be productive.
I don’t know about you but there are a lot of days when I don’t even feel like getting out of bed. That is just how bad things can get for me.
I be feeling unmotivated and just want to sleep my day away.
Meanwhile, I have a long to-do list that needs to get done.
So, how do I do it?
Well, I have to start by getting the concept of working for the day in my mind.
I have to tell myself that I’m going to get up and I’m going to be productive.
This helps me more than you can imagine.
I’m a self-starter and nine times out of ten if I set my mind on doing something, I’m going to do my best to do it.
So I tell myself what I need to do before I ever get out of bed. This gives me the push and motivation that I’m sometimes lacking.
Then I’m able to get up and get my day started.
This one is a must. It is not optional but rather a requirement.
There are only 24 hours in a day. So it wouldn’t be very realistic to say you’ll do 100 things that day, especially not longer tasks.
Your goals for the day and your to-do list should both be realistic. And I don’t just mean realistic for an average person.
You know your personal abilities. You know how much you can handle and how fast you work. Keep this in mind when deciding how you’re going to spend your day.
If there are 6 things on your list, you need to set aside time for all six things. If you aren’t sure exactly how long each thing will take, estimate and block off time for it.
Maybe you don’t like to put a time limit on your tasks. While it would be wise to do so, you don’t actually have to. You could just work on one thing until you finish.
Then you can move on to the next thing once you are done with that one task.
I’ll warn you though, this is a sure way to spend too much time on one thing.
Part of being able to work quickly and efficiently is to get very organized. The best way to get organized is to create a to-do list. You could always download an app and use the to-do list on your phone.
However, in my own experience, I really like to have a physical to-do list. So I create my own to-do list here, and it is so simple and pleasing to look at. The way you can make your to-do list look is enough to make you want to write on it.
So definitely work on getting organized so you can get more done in a day’s time. You probably have a long laundry list of things you want to do. But remember there are only 24 hours in a day. So make the best of it.
Not everything can be a priority or at least a main priority. There are going to be things on your list that are more important than others.
What I suggest doing after making a to-do list is numbering the to-dos in order of importance.
Do this based on the number of items you have. If you have 10, then order them 1-10. If you have 3 items on the list then list them 1-3.
This will help you to decide which things on the list deserve your attention first.
The worst thing you can do is try to squeeze everything in. Something is bound to be half done or not done right at all.
If you are anything like me, you really don’t see the point in doing a half job. So you want to take your time and give each project your best effort.
It is not hard to prioritize your to-do list. This will take a little time but will also save you a lot of time in the long run.
Get your priorities straight and that is it on that.
When you have a lot of different things going on around you, it is easy to be distracted by all the noise.
Ignore the noise and get focused.
But don’t just get focused, stay focused.
Don’t let everything going on around you take your focus off of the more important things.
There will always be distractions and if you let them get to you, you will never get things done.
You should work on one thing at a time unless you are great at multi-tasking.
The things that you choose to work on, should have your focus and attention.
When you keep your focus, you will get so much more done.
You will be a lot more productive than if you tried to do several things at one time.
Don’t Get Overwhelmed
When it comes to getting things done, you should not be working to the point of overwhelm. I am guilty of doing this myself and sometimes I still do it. But I also regret it every time I start breaking down and my brain starts short circuiting.
If you don’t want to break down mentally like an old car then try very hard not to work until your are overwhelmed. It is so hard to overcome feeling overwhelmed.
It feels like no matter how hard you try, that feeling just won’t go away. So do what you can to avoid overwhelm.
One amazing way to avoid overwhelm is to take much-needed breaks. But don’t even wait until you absolutely have to have a break. Take frequent breaks.
Whether you are going for a restroom break or just to grab a cup of coffee. Take a break from your tasks to do things that you enjoy. You could take a 30 minute break and watch one episode of your favorite tv show.
Then get back to work but take it easy.
There will be many days where you don’t feel like getting out of bed. This is a normal feeling. There is nothing wrong with you.
But if you pay attention to these tips that I have given you in this post, you will be able to get more done and keep your sanity.
