Today we’re discussing how to make money as a college student. Being a college student can be hard. It can be even harder if you’re a broke college student. Yes, there are some benefits to not having a big income while in college.
Those who have low incomes are normally able to qualify for financial aid with the school. You can get Pell Grants and hence the name these grants do not need to be repaid. However, these grants are supposed to be used for educational purposes.
If you’re anything like me, you’re just trying to make it out here. It can be hard to work a 9-5 and go to school at the same time but the fact still remains, you need money. How are you going to get it?
That all depends on you. I am going to share with you 5 flexible ways to make money because as a college student you need a flexible schedule. Something that won’t interfere with your studies. The 6 flexible ways to make money as a college student are:
- Freelance Writing
- Dog Walking
- Mystery Shopping
This is one of those jobs that allows you the freedom of working from anywhere as long as you have a high-speed internet connection and a computer or laptop.
I am a children’s author and I really love to write. So a few years ago I decided to freelance but I didn’t take it seriously. I have done a lot of research on freelance writing and I now realize the depth of it.
This is not only a flexible way to make money as a college student but it’s actually a very lucrative career. Or at least it can be with the right mindset and a lot of effort on your part.
Now, I’m taking it seriously because as a BROKE college student, I need some coins. If you aren’t sure how to get started in the freelance writing business, you should definitely check out this freelance writing website.
Here are a few steps that you need to take to become a successful freelance writer:
- Create a freelancing writing website and include a portfolio with your best work
- Do lots of research on freelance writing
- Search for clients on job boards
- Cold email and pitch
- Reach out to local businesses to see if they need a writer
You likely have heard the term, “portfolio” time and time again if you have been in the writing game for a while. If not, maybe you haven’t heard of it but I’m here to tell you that it’s not what you think.
When I use to hear the word portfolio, I thought of a site where I could share samples of my work and while this is true, as a freelance writer you should have more than a portfolio.
It’s been said that you need a complete website for your writing. On this website you should showcase your work in a portfolio but you should also have an About page, Service/Rates, and a Contact page.
What really makes you a freelance writer are your clients. If you don’t have clients then you may as well not have a business because you won’t have anyone to write you a check.
If you’re a newbie and just now working on getting your business off the ground (like me!) then that’s a different story. You’re not going to have clients from the jump unless you have already been putting in the work on job boards and other places.
You need to be selective as to the type of clients that you will and won’t work with. I know when you are desperate for money, you’re almost willing to settle for anything but this can’t be the case.
All clients are not created equal. You shouldn’t want to work for someone who you have to chase down about your payments, whose way too difficult, whose confused and uncertain about what they need from you.
This will only cause you to become frustrated and lose joy in your work. So choose your clients carefully. Besides, that’s the fun of being your own boss. You get to pick and choose who to work with.
Do you love dogs and being outside in the elements? Great! You should become a dog walker.
I’m almost certain that there are some dogs in your town and neighborhood who need walking on a regular basis. A lot of pet owners are so busy working that they don’t have time to walk their pets.
There may be other reasons why an owner may be unable to walk their dogs. That’s not for you to worry about, though. You are looking for a way to make a quick buck and this is one of the ways you can do it.
If you aren’t sure how to find clients there are several dog walking websites on the internet. These sites will connect you to pet owners looking for dog walkers or pet sitters and sometimes both.
You can find dog walking opportunities on sites like:
- Wag Walking
If you love babies then babysitting is right up your alley. This job is an awesome way to make money as a college student.
Know that babysitting doesn’t always mean you have to look after a baby. If that’s not your specialty you can set an age limit. Maybe you’ll only babysit for kids 4-9 years old. It’s truly your choice.
You can find babysitting jobs in locally. Consider placing an ad in your local paper, on a job board, at the library, at the pediatrician office and anywhere else where you think parents may see it.
A more modern way of finding prospective parents that are actively looking for babysitters is:
These sites are known for helping people to find local babysitters or babysitting jobs.
This one may seem a little outdated but it’s truly not. There are still some really great mystery shopping companies.
Can you get rich from mystery shopping? No.
Can you make some extra spending money? Yes.
Depending on what company you work for and their job availability you can make enough money to buy a cup of coffee or a candy bar.
I know that’s not a lot of money but as a college student I’ve realized that the smallest amount of money can count.
I’ve taken just a few dollars and bought myself a cheap meal from McDonald’s or a candy bar and a bag of chips from the dollar store.
Not to mention that mystery shopping is fun and easy. If you like shopping then this is a good little side hustle for you.
Another great thing about mystery shopping is that you don’t always have to go to the store. You could do telephone mystery shopping and make a little money from just calling around.
Some places that have mystery shopping jobs are:
- Best Mark
- Sinclair Customer Metrics
- Market Force
Cleaning jobs are so easy to come by. If you know how to clean then most places that are looking for janitors will hire you.
You’ll want to find cleaning jobs locally, of course. Some places you could check for cleaning jobs are:
- Gas stations
- Nursing Homes
Janitorial jobs are great for college students because of the flexibility. That’s what it’s all about right.
Most cleaning or janitorial jobs can be done after hours which means you will be out of class. Just to make sure the specific cleaning job you are inquiring about is flexible ask about the work hours.
Try to negotiate hours if possible. Let the hiring manager know what you are looking for. You’ll obviously need something that will work around your school schedule. A lot of bosses are all for education and will try to be understanding of this.
If they are unable to work with your schedule then the only thing to do is keep it moving. On to the next prospect.
Blogging is a wonderful side hustle. What’s even more, it’s very flexible. You can write a blog post during your free time.
Yes, it’s important to be consistent with your posting schedule. However, it doesn’t have to take a long time to write a quality blog post.
You could devote one day to research, the next day to outlining, and then a day to actually writing the post.
With this setup, you could post once a week or once every two weeks. And although you may only be looking for some extra money while you’re in college, you could become a full-time blogger and earn hundreds if not thousands of dollars every month.
You came here looking for ways to make money as a college student. Hopefully, I’ve done a good job of showing you how to make money as a college student. The 6 side hustle ideas we talked about are flexible and somewhat fun to do.
